Egmont Key is not only one of the most beautiful islands in Tampa Bay — it’s also one of the most historically significant.
Located at the mouth of Tampa Bay, the island has played an important role in Florida’s maritime history for more than 150 years.
One of the most recognizable features of Egmont Key is its historic lighthouse.
The first lighthouse was built in 1848 to help guide ships safely into Tampa Bay. Although storms and hurricanes damaged early structures, the current lighthouse — completed in 1858 — still stands today.
Visitors can see this iconic lighthouse from the beach, and it remains an important navigation aid for boaters entering the bay.
During the late 1800s and early 1900s, Egmont Key served as an important military outpost.
The island was home to Fort Dade, a coastal defense fort built to protect Tampa Bay during the Spanish–American War.
Remnants of historic buildings, brick roads, and military structures can still be seen around the island today, offering a glimpse into Florida’s past.
Today, Egmont Key is part of Egmont Key State Park and is protected as a natural and historical preserve.
Because the island is only accessible by boat and has no commercial development, it remains one of the most pristine coastal environments in the region.
It serves as an important habitat for:
This protected status helps preserve the island’s unique beauty.
Unlike many popular Florida beaches, Egmont Key offers a peaceful, natural setting where visitors can:
Its combination of history, nature, and scenic beauty makes it one of the most special destinations in the St. Petersburg area.

Another popular destination on our island trips is Shell Key Preserve, one of the most beautiful and untouched barrier islands near St. Petersburg.
Located just south of Pass-a-Grille, Shell Key is only accessible by boat, making it a peaceful escape from crowded public beaches.
Shell Key is famous for its natural beauty and relaxed atmosphere. Visitors love it for:
Because it’s a protected preserve, the island remains largely undeveloped, offering a true “old Florida” experience.
Shell Key is considered one of the top shelling destinations in the area.
Depending on tides and conditions, you may find:
Many guests enjoy walking the shoreline searching for treasures while enjoying the peaceful scenery.
The calm, shallow waters around Shell Key make it ideal for:
Swimming and floating
Relaxing on the beach
Taking photos
Enjoying a quiet nature escape
It’s a great spot for families, couples, and anyone wanting a laid-back day on the water.
Shell Key Preserve is also a protected habitat for wildlife.
